Toviaz
™ (
fesoterodine fumarate) is a prescription
overactive bladder medication. Specifically, it is approved to help treat the following symptoms of an overactive bladder:
- Sudden, frequent urges to urinate
- Frequent urination (usually defined as needing to go more than eight times in 24 hours)
- Leaking accidents (known as urinary incontinence or urge incontinence).
Toviaz is made by Schwarz Pharma Produktions and is marketed and distributed by Pfizer, Inc.
An overactive bladder is often due to bladder muscle
contractions that are too frequent and uncontrollable. Toviaz works by helping to relax the muscles of the bladder, thereby helping to relieve many of the symptoms of an overactive bladder. Specifically, Toviaz is part of a group of medications known as antimuscarinics or anticholinergics. It works by blocking specific receptors (called muscarinic receptors) in the bladder.
Studies have shown Toviaz to be effective for relieving many of the symptoms of an overactive bladder. In clinical studies, people who took this medication experienced a significant reduction in the frequency of wetting accidents. Additionally, people who took the medication used the bathroom less frequently and were able to pass more urine each time they used the bathroom (the frequent muscle contractions of an overactive bladder usually prevent the bladder from holding a normal amount of urine).
