Sanctura and Pregnancy

At this time, it is not known whether it is safe for pregnant women to take Sanctura. Pregnancy problems occurred when the medication was tested in animal studies. When Sanctura was given to pregnant rats, it appeared to increase the risk of miscarriages. Due to these possible risks, be sure to talk to your healthcare provider if you are taking Sanctura and pregnancy occurs.

Is Sanctura Safe During Pregnancy?

Sanctura® (trospium chloride) is a prescription medication approved for the treatment of an overactive bladder. It may not be safe for use in pregnant women. In animal studies, Sanctura caused problems when used during pregnancy.

Sanctura and Pregnancy Category C

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses a category system to classify the possible risks to a fetus when a specific medicine is taken during pregnancy. Pregnancy Category C is given to medicines that have not been studied in pregnant humans but that do appear to cause harm to the fetus in animal studies. Also, medicines that have not been studied in any pregnant women or animals are automatically given a pregnancy Category C rating.

When given to rats, Sanctura increased the risk of miscarriages. No studies have evaluated the drug in pregnant women.

It is important to note that animals do not always respond to medicines the same way that humans do. A pregnancy Category C medicine may be given to a pregnant woman if her healthcare provider believes that the benefits to the mother outweigh any possible risks to the unborn child.
