Sanctura XR

Sanctura XR is a medication that may be prescribed to treat symptoms of an overactive bladder. By blocking certain receptors in the bladder and relaxing the muscles of the bladder, Sanctura XR can help treat frequent urination, frequent urges to urinate, and leaking accidents. The medication comes in the form of a capsule that is taken once a day. Possible side effects of Sanctura XR include dry mouth, constipation, and dry eyes.

 

What Is Sanctura XR?

Sanctura® XR (trospium XR) is a prescription medication approved for the treatment of certain bladder problems. Specifically, it is approved to help treat the following overactive bladder symptoms:
 
  • Frequent urination (usually defined as needing to go more than eight times in a day)
  • Leaking accidents (known as urinary incontinence or urge incontinence)
  • Sudden, frequent urges to urinate.

Sanctura XR is also available in a short-acting tablet that is taken twice daily (see Sanctura for more information).

How Does Sanctura XR Work?

Sanctura XR is known as an antimuscarinic or anticholinergic medication. This type of medication is used to treat a wide variety of conditions, including an overactive bladder. Sanctura XR works for bladder problems by blocking specific receptors (called muscarinic receptors) in the bladder, which helps to relax the muscles of the bladder. Because an overactive bladder is often due to bladder muscle contractions that are too frequent and uncontrollable, Sanctura XR can help relieve many of the symptoms of an overactive bladder.
