Generic Myrbetriq

No generic versions of Myrbetriq (mirabegron) are available at this time, and it is unclear when they will be introduced. Although mirabegron is sometimes called the "generic name" of Myrbetriq, it is simply the active ingredient in the medication and not a generic version of it.

Can I Buy Generic Myrbetriq?

Myrbetriq™ (mirabegron) is a medication prescribed for people with an overactive bladder. It may help relieve symptoms of this condition, such as the urge to urinate, frequent urination, and leaking accidents.

Myrbetriq is made by Astellas Pharma Technologies, Inc., for Astellas Pharma US, Inc. It is protected from generic competition by patents that have not yet expired.

When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

The first patent for Myrbetriq expired in September 2013, yet no generic versions are available. However, it appears that the September 2013 patent is related to the way the extended-release tablet is made, and not anything to do with the actual drug or its use.

It is unlikely that the expiration of this patent will allow a generic to enter the market. The next patent for Myrbetriq is set to expire in October 2018; this is the earliest possible date that a generic version could become available.

However, other circumstances could come up to delay or shorten this exclusivity period. This could include things such as lawsuits or other patents for new Myrbetriq uses. Once the patent expires, several companies may begin manufacturing a generic Myrbetriq drug.

Is Mirabegron a Generic Myrbetriq?

No -- mirabegron is the active ingredient in Myrbetriq, not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name."

The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version of a medicine, the original medicine must have gone off-patent and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
