Generic Gelnique

At this time, there are no generic Gelnique (oxybutynin gel) products available. The medication is currently under the protection of patents that prevent any generic versions from being manufactured. When the first patent expires in April 2020, however, other companies may begin producing generic versions, although patents for specific uses or lawsuits may delay the availability.

Is a Generic Version of Gelnique Available?

Gelnique™ (oxybutynin gel) is a prescription medication approved for treating an overactive bladder. It is the first overactive bladder medication available as a skin gel.
Gelnique is made by Watson Pharmaceuticals, Inc. At this time, Gelnique is protected by patents that prevent any generic versions from being sold in the United States.

When Will Generic Gelnique Be Available?

The first patent for Gelnique currently expires in April 2020. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version of the drug could become available. However, there are other circumstances that could come up to extend or shorten the exclusivity period of Gelnique. This could include such things as lawsuits or other patents for specific Gelnique uses. Once Gelnique goes off patent, there may be several companies that manufacture a generic Gelnique drug.

Is Oxybutynin Gel a Generic Gelnique?

No -- oxybutynin is the active ingredient in Gelnique (as well as a few other medications), but it is not a generic version of Gelnique. What can be confusing is that, oftentimes, the active ingredient of a drug is referred to as the "generic name." The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version of a medicine, the original medicine must have gone off patent, and another company besides the original manufacturer would make the product.
