Drowsiness, constipation, headaches, and dry mouth are the most common side effects seen with Ditropan XL. Side effects that are less common but potentially serious include an irregular heart rhythm, severe constipation, and difficulty passing urine. An Introduction to Ditropan XL Side Effects

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with Ditropan XL^® (oxybutynin ER); however, not everyone who takes the medication will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Possible Side Effects of Ditropan XL

Ditropan XL has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occur in a group of people taking the drug are documented.

In these studies, the most common side effects of Ditropan XL included:

Dry mouth -- in up to 61 percent of people (see Ditropan XL and Dry Mouth)
Constipation -- up to 13 percent (see Ditropan XL and Constipation)
Drowsiness -- up to 12 percent
Headaches -- up to 10 percent
Diarrhea -- up to 9 percent
Nausea -- up to 9 percent.

Other common Ditropan XL side effects, occurring in 5 to 8 percent of people, included:

Weakness
Pain
Indigestion or heartburn
Dizziness
Blurred vision
Dry eyes
Bladder infection (urinary tract infection or UTI).
