Generic Detrol LA
You can now buy Detrol LA (tolterodine ER) in generic form. The generic version comes in two different strengths. Both have an "AB" rating, which means they are considered equivalent to brand-name Detrol LA.
Detrol® LA (tolterodine ER) is a prescription medication used to treat an overactive bladder. It is an extended-release form of tolterodine that is taken just once a day.
Brand-name Detrol LA is made by Pfizer, Inc. The drug is also available in generic form.
Generic Detrol LA is available in the following strengths:
- Tolterodine ER 2 mg capsules
- Tolterodine ER 4 mg capsules.
It is made by manufacturers such as:
- Mylan Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
- Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc.
The version sold by Teva is actually an "authorized generic," which means it is the actual brand-name medication that is just packaged and sold under a generic name. It is exactly the same as Detrol LA in every way (it is even made by AstraZeneca), except it comes in a bottle with a generic name.
All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns a rating to each one.
An "AB" rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication. All of the generic versions of Detrol LA currently available have an "AB" rating, meaning they should be equivalent to the brand-name product.
However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name medication. This might include fillers, dyes, or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with allergies or sensitivities.
