Detrol LA Side Effects
Constipation, headache, and dry mouth are the most common side effects that have been reported with Detrol LA. Problems with this drug are typically mild and do not require medical attention in most cases. However, there are a number of potentially serious side effects that should be reported to a healthcare provider immediately, including confusion, an irregular heart rhythm, and severe constipation.
As with any medicine, side effects are possible with Detrol® LA (tolterodine ER); however, not everyone who takes the drug will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Detrol LA. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list of Detrol LA side effects with you.)
Detrol LA has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occur in a group of people taking the drug are documented and are then compared to side effects that occur in another group of people not taking the medicine. This way, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine.
In these studies, the most common side effects of Detrol LA included:
- Dry mouth -- in up to 23 percent of people (see Detrol LA and Dry Mouth)
- Headaches -- up to 6 percent
- Constipation -- up to 6 percent (see Detrol LA and Constipation)
- Abdominal pain (stomach pain) -- up to 4 percent
- Indigestion or heartburn -- up to 3 percent
- Dry eyes -- up to 3 percent
- Drowsiness -- up to 3 percent.
Other common Detrol LA side effects, occurring in 1 to 2 percent of people, included:
